10 Game-Changing Tips for Filming Events.

Filming large spaces and live events can be tricky, due to limited control over lighting and performances. The key is to capture the event's feelings and tell an engaging story.

  1. Arrive at the venue an hour early to set up. This gives you time to set up, plan your shots, and rehearse before the event begins.

  2. Start with various wide-angle shots, both tracking and still shots. Use a gimbal for smoother motion.

  3. Always record at least ten seconds after setting up the shot to give editors more options. I like to count in my head for up to 15 seconds to ensure that there is good-quality footage that can be used for the edit.

  4. For audience reactions and performances, use a long lens if possible. If you aren’t permitted to show people’s faces, try over-the-shoulder shots to capture a viewer's perspective. Close-ups of food and drinks are also useful to get a variety of shots.

  5. A zoom lens is ideal for live events, allowing you to switch easily between wide and close shots.

  6. Set your camera to 60fps for smooth footage, which allows you to slow down or speed up the footage.

  7. Plan your transitions and movements beforehand, considering pacing and music to enhance your creativity when filming.

  8. While you are engaged in filming, make it a point to periodically take your eyes away from the camera screen and immerse yourself in your surroundings. By doing so, you can discover and capture a range of different angles and perspectives. This makes you get a variety of shots, which is essential for the edit to create a compelling, narrative-based video for your client

  9. Don’t hesitate to invite audience members or performers to actively engage with the camera during your event. You might consider asking them to wave or share their heartfelt feelings about being part of this special occasion. This interactive method enhances your video by creating a feeling of involvement and movement.

  10. Lastly, be patient and ready to keep recording at all times.
